About Us
Older man walking with childSRDA Mission
The mission of SRDA is to provide programs and projects that enhance the quality of life for the senior community of Pueblo and increase opportunities for independent living. Through its inclusive structure, symbolized by SRDA’s umbrella logo, the agency ensures that Pueblo area senior citizens and other frail and handicapped persons maintain as healthy, self-reliant, and independent lifestyles as possible.

In 1994, thanks to a combination of public and private funding, the Joseph H. Edwards Active Adult Center was built in downtown Pueblo at 230 North Union Avenue. Our impressive facility, located near the Historic Arkansas Riverwalk Project, City Hall, Historic Union Avenue District, and senior apartment complexes, houses the SRDA offices and our many comprehensive programs.

Older Resident Population
Today, SRDA continues to be challenged by the high proportion of older residents living in Pueblo County and the number of elderly at or below the poverty threshold. It is estimated that approximately 25,554 or 19% of the county’s population is 60 years of age or older, compared to 13% in the state as a whole.

Approximately 38% of these older individuals are 75 years of age or older. Of further significance, there are 2,600 seniors over the age of 85 in Pueblo County, which is a 46% increase since the 1990 Census. According to the state demographer, the senior population is expected to increase as the baby boomers turn 60 years old.

Unique in Our Own Way
SRDA is unique and outstanding in many ways, from the model programs that are offered in a one-stop convenient location to the minimal overhead administrative expenses accrued. Overhead costs make up only 12% of SRDA’s overall budget, allowing more money to be available and implemented in direct services.

In many regions senior programs are fragmented throughout the community, causing duplication and gaps in service. Our elected officials and community leaders recognized the value and importance of combining several programs under one umbrella organization. The end result provides seniors and the disabled community with better accessibility and coordination of services. In March 2005, the 65th Colorado General Assembly commended SRDA for our dedicated service to the community.

We Make a Difference in Our Community
In today’s long-term care market, institutional care or assisted living costs can range anywhere between $30,000 and $60,000. Nationally, Medicare and Medicaid costs are skyrocketing. At the local level elected officials are constantly looking for ways to stay within a budget while trying to improve the quality of life for their constituents.

SRDA has long been recognized as a model program which allows seniors the choice and opportunity to stay in the comfort of their own homes, but allows them to do so at a fraction of the cost of an institutional care facility. SRDA provides services to all of Pueblo County and contracts with other organizations, including the City and County of Pueblo, to offer the best comprehensive quality of care and meet the needs of our senior population. Our specialized programs also allow family members and care-takers access to support services and resources that enhance their roles and address their own quality of life.
